You visit illegal websites email scam
The spambastards are at it again! (I know they never stop, but I write so many of these, I’m running out of things to open with!). An email arrived this morning, purporting to be from the FBI, telling me I visit illegal websites. Other than the fact that the supposed FBI email was addressed to Sir/madam, I don’t visit illegal websites and the FBI has no jurisdiction in the UK, it was the weakest piece of phishing / malware spam that I’ve seen in a long time.
These morons have no imagination, but despite the fact that that they have knocked-up this malware /phishing email in 5 minutes, there will be hundreds of people, all over the world, that open the zip file and either given them personal information, or down a piece of malware into their machine. If you receive the FBI email, “You visit illegal websites”, bin it straight away, don’t open anything and if you are gullible enough to open the document, don’t fill it in and hope you got a phishing version, rather than the worm version!
The email details:
Subject: You visit illegal websites
From: FBI [info94024@fbi.gov]
Attachment: Document.zip (7kb)
Sir/Madam, we have logged your IP-address on more than 40 illegal Websites. Important: Please answer our questions! The list of questions are attached.
If you get a variation of the above. please take the two minutes to send us a comment with the variation details, but don’t be tempted to click on the attachment, Have a mighty fine day

I had the info88969@ fbi.gov as an address. Glad I have a Mac and that .exe files can’t be open. They didn’t think of that, obviously.

I got this rather silly email too. You’re spot on. These idiots clearly don’t know the proper legal procedure. ISP would let the police know if I visited anything dodgy. I don’t visit dodgy websites anyway, so I knew it was a scam. Keep up the good work.

I received this email supposedly from the FBI, except that the full header shows a from: address in .ua , Ukraine — surprise!

May 5th, 2011 at 2:07 am
Another Australian. I recieved the..you have visited over 40 illegal websites with a Zip file attatched. My first thought was…I think the FBI…who don’t have juristiction in Aus….would be a bit more sophisticated than that. Must just be that time of year…have recieved heaps of phishing scams lately..am so over it. PS at least they got the English right in this one…Hahahahaha

Twice in one day (5/4/2011) received the following email, and I am thinking to change my email address. Very annoying!
From: “FBI”
Date: May 4, 2011 5:31:26 PM EDT
To:
Subject: You visit illegal websites
Sir/Madam, we have logged your IP-address on more than 40 illegal Websites. Important: P lease answer our questions! The list of questions are attached. gu ruw
May 5th, 2011 at 1:06 pm
I have received half a dozen of these and the incorrect English always gives them away. The FBI doesn’t send email to individuals telling them what crimes they’ve committed! How ridiculous!
May 5th, 2011 at 1:13 pm
mine was FBI i did explore the zip file but i didn’t extract it because it was a .exe file. i thought it was real because just this week, the FBI worked in collaboration with our NBI somewhere near our city and sort of busted an illegal car dealer. funny thing was, i don’t frequently use this eadd. :))
May 5th, 2011 at 1:43 pm
I GOT THIS:
Sir/Madam, we have logged your IP-address on more than 40 illegal Websites. Important: Please answer our questions! The list of questions are attached.
AND ANSWERED THIS:
nice try but i don’t open files that are detected from spam detector neither trusting such obvious scams, don’t send other spam emails!
+ the law doesn’t support this email also many users that did opened the file, just reported this email as 100% scam/spam
+do not send any more spam emails or we, the fair pc users will report your actions
+there are not illegal websites, also i am positive that there is a personal information - data right and you 1st have to show that you have the authority to investigate.
By replying to a spam email, you are merely confirming your email address is live and your email address is likely to find it’s way onto even more spam lists. I know that you believe that by sending them a smart answer, you are pissing them off in some way, but they really don’t give a toss - they will simply think - oh, we have another live one, let’s add it to out list of confirmed live email addresses and sell it on. Don’t answer these scam emails, don’t click on anything, simply delete them and move on with your day. (I’m sorry to sound harsh in response to you feeling good about your reply, I simply want to get accross that these are criminals and the fact that you have answered them, let’s them know they have another live one
)BM

May 5th, 2011 at 10:06 pm
I accidently opened it what do i do?!?!?!? info75328 @fbi.gov Download a free virus checker and see if you have a virus. If you have, but some virus removal software to delete it. Malwarebytes is a good piece of kit, you could try that. BM
May 5th, 2011 at 10:08 pm
i only opened the zip file but my computer couldnt open it and i didnt answer anything is that bad? You should be okay, but best to check, as above - Download a free virus checker and see if you have a virus. If you have, buy some virus removal software to delete it. Malwarebytes is a good piece of kit, you could try that. BM
May 5th, 2011 at 11:21 pm
In Australia as well….message info52008@ fbi.gov with a zip file attachment - never a good thing if it goes to the junk folder and has a zip file would be stupid to open that one. Have a great day everyone..
May 6th, 2011 at 3:10 am
I opened it. Now my computer is saying that damaged hard drive clusters are detected and the RAM memory usage is critically high. I’ve tried restoring the files from my last backup using Norton 360 but it hasn’t work, I don’t think. I personally don’t rate Norton and would suggest using an alternative free check online before dumping your machine. BM
May 6th, 2011 at 7:44 am
I received the same from info00372 @fbi.gov
Mail was like this-
Sir/Madam, we have logged your IP-address on more than 40 illegal Websites. Important: Please answer our questions! The list of questions are attached. Thank GOD no file was attached with the mail otherwise I would have opened the file.
Who is sending this? It’s Jim from 2874 High Street in Auchtertool - don’t tell anyone though………

Phil Phil, Are you okay - good question - other than being a mac user, you should be fine

I got that E-mail. I opened it, because i got scared after i saw the senders address. That .exe file damaged my all hard drives. But now i am alert. “‘I want that email again”‘. But i cannot retrieve it because i deleted it permanantly & its more than 24 hours. I WANT THAT EMAIL AGAIN. I have a good plan to do with that email. Can you tell me how i can retrieve it. Just forget about it. You’re plan is 99.99% certain to be a waste of time. Learn the lesson and move on with your life. BM

I’m in Dallas, Texas and received 3 in a row! Two at 10:36PM and another at 10:52PM. Didn’t open the attachment, but I’m assuming it asks for personal information. Stupid! There are several on the go, some ask for personal information and others trash your machine. BM
