Is Google PageRank Dead?
Is PageRank Dead ?
Kevin from Charles Nicholls, the shaving accessories online store has asked the same question that I was asked back in June of last year, namely,
Is GooglePageRank not dead? I read in a forum that it didn’t mean anything anymore, yet Google have just updated toolbar pageRank. Why are they bothering if it doesn’t mean anything?
As my opinion on PageRank has not changed since the last time that I answered the question, I’ll simply tack that post onto the bottom of this reply. (yes, I’ve been slapped with the lazy stick this morning!)
From June 2005:
PageRank for Entertainment Purposes only?
Ron from Jazz Monkeys asks,
Is page rank not dead? I read quote from google that said “page rank is for entertainment purposes” now.
To be accurate Ron, the quote was from John Galt, on a forum thread on Search Engine Watch, and he claims to have received a contact from a Google representative, who is supposed to have said,
“The PageRank that is displayed in the Google Toolbar is for entertainment purposes only. Due to repeated attempts by hackers to access this data, Google updates the PageRank data very infrequently because is it not secure. On average, the PR that is displayed in the Google Toolbar is several months old. If the toolbar is showing a PR of zero, this is because the user is visiting a new URL that hasn’t been updated in the last update. The PR that is displayed by the Google Toolbar is not the same PR that is used to rank the webpage results so there is no need to be concerned if your PR is displayed as zero. If a site is showing up in the search results, it doesn’t not have a real PR of zero, the Toolbar is just out of date”
Assuming that that John Galt didn’t make this up, and I have no reason to suspect that he did, what is this saying? It says that The Google toolbar PR is out of date. He may have put it in more emotive language, but that’s all he’s saying.
I would have thought that the fact that Google PageRank on the bar was out of date was fairly obvious, as it only gets updated every three months or so. In fact it hasn’t been updated for 68 days and it was 111 days between updates prior to that.
Unfortunately, Chinese Whispers started to go around the industry and every blog entry, or forum entry got steadily worse, with all the “Experts” trying to get their pennyworth in.
Of course PageRank in the toolbar is not completely accurate and of course, at times, it can be two or three months out of date, but is PageRank dead - nah, it’s still alive and kicking - for now anyway.
Thanks for taking the time to write Ron. If you had included your URL I would have been happy to give your site a link from the article. Maybe next time?
