RSS can stand for a number of well known phrases, such as Repetitive Strain Syndrome. But in the world of SEO, RSS can mean one (or more) of three XML related phrases.

  • Rich Site Summary
  • RDF Site Summary
  • Really Simple Syndication

These XML (Extensible Markup Language) related languages are aimed at sharing links to new pages, articles, news or even draw attention to other multimedia content such as animation, film, images and sounds, like our own RSS feeds, The Big Man's SEO blog RSS feed sheet and the Kenkai articles RSS feed.

RSS Feed Sheet Tags

Within an RSS feed sheet, there are a number of tags that give information about the people writing the RSS feed. These tags can include copyright information, description, a link-able image and a contact email address. Some news aggregators (RSS readers) do not show the images but there are plenty of RSS feed sheets to try.

RSS Feed Sheet Comparison

An RSS feed sheet can be compared to the headlines given on the front of a newspaper. Often you see a tag line, then the page number to find out more information about the story. Rather than turning the pages to read the story on a newspaper, the user can click the link given with the item. One of the advantages with RSS feed sheet is that the user can find out information whether it be a news item, new piece of stock in a shop or an exciting new article or blog post almost instantly.

Reading RSS Feeds

There are a number of ways to read RSS feed sheets.

  • Online RSS Parsers
  • News Aggregators
  • Instant Messenger Plug-ins
  • Reading between the tags

There are programs that parse the language online such as My Yahoo! even though the RSS Headlines section is still in beta version.

News aggregators are programs that act as a browser for RSS and XML feed sheets. These parse the RSS code into normal readable content.

Instant Messenger plug-ins for IM programs such as Trillian allow feed sheets to be read and pop up when a new message is found.

If none of these options are good enough, then perhaps code-junkies may be comfortable in reading the unparsed RSS feed sheet also known as reading between the tags. This may be a quick fix for small RSS feed sheets, but for a larger RSS sheets, this is not an ideal process.
