FedEx notification # email scam

I. like millions of others received numerous FedEx notification emails this morning with a zip file FedEx.zip attached. The Fedex.zip file contains malware, so don’t open it. What does the file do, I don’t know and quite frankly I don’t care, it has already been deleted from my machine!

The details of my FedEx notification email were as follows:

FedEx notification #75643 (although the other subjects had different numbers)

Jody Mccann [jenniecorbett@hotmail.com] (Either spoofed, a dummy email address, or Jenniecorbett is a first time spammer!)

Attachment: FedEx.zip (10KB)

Rick Says:

I’ve been receiving same from all 3 big parcel services for a few weeks now.
Investigation of the root domain they come from (Saudinet et al) are some of the worlds major botnet hosts.

Unzipped, the attachment has a pdf icon, looks harmless enough, until you notice the .exe on the end. Windows default is to hide known file extensions, so many people may not see the .exe.
Also of note; MS Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010 did not find anything wrong with the zip or the exe it contained, so don’t rely on your AV to flag it.

Do not run the attachment.

I work for FedEx in UK. We are aware that there have been several different types of emails claiming to be from FedEx, it would help us to locate the people responsible if any emails received were forwarded to our security team : abuse @ fedex.com

natia Says:

I have received the same e-mail and unfortunately opened it. My antivirus detected virus and I deleted the downloaded e-mail. Then I scanned my computer but it turned off some minutes later reporting that windows is shutting down because system was infected. I do not know what to do. Will it delete all the information that I have into my computer? Not knowing your system, nor the virus that the message says has infected it, it’s hard to say what will happen to your files. When you switch your machine back on, if it were me, I’d run a virus checker to see what the virus is and then use your virus checking software to delete it. BM

Anonymous Says:

It appears to be coming through as “infoaw@ fedex.com” now, the easiest way to tell is when there is multiple recipients.

Dakota M. Says:

I was wondering what this was when I opened it, I am a very advanced user and I noticed the .exe at the end right after I scanned it with malwarebytes and spyhunter I accedently opened it even though I knew it was a virus, it immediatly melted and cloned itself to a folder in the “appdata” section of my windows vista computer, I blocked all the times it has tried to open itself which means it is “persistant” also meaning with enough time I can back trace it to the starting IP address, as of know I’m running a scan with spyhunter I’ll post what I find (if I can remember this site) when I find anything. -Grim

Yep - same here. Have received several notifications similar to this over the last several weeks. Ron Says:

OMG! I opened the email, but NOT the attachment! Can you get infected by just opening the email, but leaving the attachment alone! Thanks. No you should be fine, Ron. It’s always worth running a virus scan on your machine, nonetheless. You can get free software one here, that’ll check for you: http://www.malwarebytes.org :) BM

Ron Says:

My brother who owns a small business order some items last Thursday and Firday (April 1st). He just received this bogus email fwith attachment and open it unfortunately. After this was done all of a sudden XP 2011 Antivirus program started running and found very quickly a whole bunch of serious virus. This looked like a Micrsoft product that required a subscription (payment) by credit card. Seems to me very suspicious. System is really hosed up since you now can not get to internet now and the scan and messages re-appear. It gives option to continue on, but it just restarts scan and prompts for same options. I fear this is scam to get valid credit card number. I assume we will have to re-load the XP OS .I assume the scam is to get your credit card number.

spence Says:

i got the “arrive in 7 business day” and scanned it, no virus? then opened it, still no problems? did it not affect me because im using a mac?

Ron D. Says:

Yesterday I was checking my two FedEx parcels that I shipped and received this message. I opened the file thinking it was from FedEx and it immediately installed the XP Security 2011 malware program which hijacks any browsers which try to open. First time in many years I was fooled by a scam program. My McAfee virus software did nothing to stop it. I downloaded and installed Malwarebytes, which found the trojan and deleted it. However, no .EXE programs would then run, effectively ruining my harddisk.

Luckily, the malware only affects the user profile it is in - not the entire computer. I was able to log off my normal profile and log into a new account which acts like a new computer. The malware does not affect this new profile. Because I was not able to remove the malware from my original profile, I took the long and tedious route of moving all my programs to the new profile - then deleting the original profile. I have had no problems since.

anyone struggling to remove this, follow the instructions below.

Log into your PC VIA another User Account, the Virus wont be there! & Youl’ll have access to the internet, when you have access to the net via another user account run a decent scan like the microsoft one below
http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx, or one similar, after it finds the Virus log back into
the infected User Account and do a system restore, this will solve the problem i can assure you

I had gotten the email several times via my Yahoo account… I noticed them in the Spam folder. Obviously it’s a virus… especially since the sender forwarded the same message to a ton of people. Epic fail. Luckily I have a Mac and no virtual emulating software… so this doesn’t really affect me.

But still, I hope this virus gets squashed fast for the sake of all my inexperienced PC friends out there. There’s a word and a phrase I didn’t think I’d see put together, “Luckily” and “I have a mac” :) BM

Dick Gazinya Says:

I get these spammy FedEx emails all the time. Just a quick note in response to those that have opened the attachments and got a case of computer herpes, here’s a short version on how you can “cure” yourself.

A friend of mine in the UK accidentally clicked on a spam link which installed a wicked virus and no matter what I did, it blocked me from removing it. My solution was to shut his computer down and then open it up again in safe mode. Then I downloaded the Malwarebytes program (google it) onto my non-infected computer (the exe file for Malwarebytes), then transferred it onto a USB stick, loaded it onto my friend’s infected computer, installed it, and was able to “arrest” the offending virus within safe mode.

I’m somewhat savvy with computers but don’t claim to be a guru. This was my solution so hopefully it will help in the case of the fedex virus emails. good luck Thanks for this Dick, BM

Yvonne Crawford Says:

I have gotten several (and still do daily) attempts of spam with similar titles and “kill ur computer” intentions. Fortunately my virus software stopped one from trying to tag my computer. So far, I have gotten similar spam e-mails from the following agencies (and none of them seem to care when you tell them! They jus say, yeah, these kinds of things happen, but it’s not us, the Real company indicated.): FedEx, FBI Washington DC, USPS, UPS, Interpol Police, International Police, DHL, and United Nations Comp Unit! Of course, our curiosity sometimes gets the best of us, but people please keep aware if these type of e-mails goes into “SPAM”, it likely IS spam, and will likely harm your computer if you open them or download their attached files! Thank you for your services, it helps a little to know You are not the only target sometimes.

The first server traces to that region of love and peace, Palestine.
The second server is owned by bankofamerica in CA, USA

Hi,

Unfortunately I opened it without thinking as I am expecting a parcel.

What can I do? Run an online virus scan through your machine, to see if you are infected with any malware. If you are, invest in malware removal software. If you opened it and gave them any of your details and if they involved account numbers, cancel your cards and notify your bank. You should also check your credit rating if you gave them personal details, as if there have been recent credit checks in your name, it means thatthey have been opening store cards and taking out loans in your name. I got 3 sent within 1 week (to 3 different emails). I am expecting a parcel, and hence finally opened the last one. I extracted the zip. it looked like a pdf. When I clicked on it, nothing happened. So I opened Adobe pdf and tried finding it in the folder, it wasnt listed as a pdf…so I deleted it. That said I’ve run my Trend Micro PC-Cillin scan and it hasnt found anything. I’ve been able to use my computer like normal…Should I still download the malwarebytes and run it too? Annie, belt and braces is always a good policy. It won’t take long to download and run and you are better safe than sorry. BM

Patrick Says:

I was stupid enough to click the exe file and got ‘ínfected’. Turns out this Fedex delivered malware is simply hiding your folders, giving one the perception that all your files have been deleted. Do not re-format your disk or you will lose everything if you had not backed up your stuff. Run using the free Microsoft Essential Security (MSE) to remove the malware. To unhide all your folders, go to Control Panel\Folder\view..”Show hidden files”and then bingo you will see them all intact. Right click on the folder and unclick “hidden” in property. For the “All Program” that has been hidden, do similar things by doing a Right Click on the task bar/Property/Start Menu/Customize…to unhide.

Fred Says:

I received a notice of non-delivery from info@ fedex.net. I thought my Xmas gifts went astray and immediately clicked on the attachment, which did nothing apparent, before I noticed that it was an exe file sent to consecutive yahoo addresses. I shut down and restarted my session and ran a full malwarebytes scan which found nothing. I forwarded it to abuse@ fedex.com. I hope that’s the end to it. fingies crossed….. :)

To Robin Miller,
I have received the very same email today morning. I really thought this is genuine. Received A notification of non-delivery 2/10/12, number 6cdc7057ffafc1a1. Is this a scam or real? How can I tell? You don’t even state what the email says. If your email takes the same for as the other examples given, then yes it’s a scam. If you gave your email address to the delivery company, you received a card thrugh the door when you were not in, if the email is addressed to you, rather than dear customer, if they state the senders address, your address and the tracking code and obviously if you are expecing a parcel to arrive via this delivery company, then maybe it’s real. :) BM

My parents Quite Frankly believed them at first, and i too followed as i had ordered some designer lingere over the internet and it had been more than a month since i had purchased it and it still hadnt rocked up yet so thought this was totally legit, that it had just been simply lost in the mail and spent a good week scouring the net for something to open up the file to get my underwear but my machine wouldnt do it! Thank god it didnt. And Thanks to this website you saved my computer.

Many Kudous To this website : )

Sincerly

A Very Glad Person.

Umer Says:

I got the same thingy like it states that the parcel sent out to me could not reach me as the address was incorrect it asked me to print the attached invoice and take it to the fedex office to get my parcel. the thing lloked so legit and I was also expecting some stuff to arrive but I never game them my email address so that got me suspicious and then I searched over the internet and found this website guys and gals dont believe it if you download and run the shit believe me its gonna cost you a lot!! Regards to this website!!! Thank YOU!!

Umer Says:

1 more thing guys mine states it subject as USPS Fedex which doesnt makes any sense as USPS is united states postal service and fedex is federal express and the name of the sender was YOUR FEDEX and the attachment was in zip. none of the companies send emails to their clients in zips they send it in like pdf or word normally they dont even attach anything and the sender had an email id like services @fedex.com so just be careful and forward to abuse @fedex.com

Ally Says:

Got one of these today too - from legal @ fedex.com. So glad I suspected it wasn’t as it seemed and deleted immediately! Phew!

Al Says:

Hi I got the same FedEx hoax email, saying that my package could not be delivered because of the incorrect address. I am expecting a package and I saw that the sender contained ‘fedex’ in their address so I clicked the .zip file in the attachment. I use Firefox so it gave me the option to “open” the file or “save’ it in my downloads folder. I clicked open and it seemed to have sent something to the temp file folder. It didn’t feel right so I searched online and found out this was a scam. It’s really upsetting! Then I tried to search for the file on my pc and could not find anything.

I have Norton 360 and it did not detect anything when I clicked open for the .zip file, but when I checked the security history log around the time I opened the file, it showed that it blocked a “medium’ level threat, saying “unauthorized access blocked” (open process token). Any idea if that was the threat that was blocked? I am also scanning my pc right now with Norton. Would it catch it if it inseed has been infected? Please advise! Norton isn’t something I would personally recommend or would use myself, so I can’t really tell you how effective it would be at finding a virus. If it didn’t detect it in the first place and you are sure there is a piece of malware there, then I doubt it will find it now, but I’m no expert on Norton, Al. Use something like malwarebytes to check it. If there is a threat there, Malwarebytes will find it. BM

Just received one of these emails. It is actually pretty convincing as I am to receive a package tomorrow. My email says “Your Fed Ex package #1266532 did not contain a deliverable address. Your package is being held at your local fedex location. Please print the attached order confirmation and pick up your package in 3 business days.” Fortunately I noticed the attachment was a .exe file so I did not open it. Went to the FEDEX website and noticed the package is still set for arrival tomorrow with no notices on the site. I am sure I would have been told the same information on my package tracking page if they had tried to deliver. When in doubt go to the Fedex website. From what I have read from this thread I would have had quite a virus to fight. Thank you internet and random threaders for keeping us aware and out of trouble.

I found the above email in the Spam box in my Yahoo account. The mail didn’t even open in the inbox when I moved it to look closer as I have been waiting for a package. I tried to download the attached file but virus was detected and I left it there.
I still had to make sure this didn’t mean the package I’d been waiting for so I did something really stupid. I forwarded the email into my other email account. The zip file was downloaded and I opened the .exe file. I wish I could turn the clock back! It opened as a text file and was all scripted text just like other .exe file I had happened to open in the past on my MacBook.

Nothing happened so far and I deleted the original email, the forwarded email and the downloaded file. I feel extremely paranoid as I don’t have any anti virus programme.

I actually *am* expecting a package from FedEx, but I just stick to using my tracking number on the FedEx website.

Jascha Says:

Okay, the comments don’t print email addresses, which is fair. Suffice it to say that the “from” email on the spam I got *looked* legit, having a fedex domain name and everything. I knew it wasn’t, but the “from” address is good enough to probably convince some people out there that it’s a genuine email…

tim brooks Says:

So glad I saw this! I actually made a purchase just an hour before I recieved a ups tracking notification telling me they couldnt deliver my package: too heavy for “free shipping” that I had to come pick it up, (Ihad JUST ordered it!), but because I have had several items shipped fedex over the years, I know what the tracking numbers look like and the one I was given (again, too early to have one yet), was soo different from the legit numbers that it was obvious… but boy was I tempted. for once I left well enough alone!

Iva Says:

Yes, I get quite a few of those. Usually I check and it says multiple recipients (I mean, it has a list of people’s names , really similar). This time it was just me and it was home @fedex something so I almost opened it (on my phone) but then started thinking… if its true and the parcel was returned because it was too big they would leave a notification in the house… so … never ever open something like that… they are trying really hard to bug the computers.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. These people send out tens of thousands of these emails every day and the majority of people that get caught out are expecting a parcel. Most people buy online regularly, whether it be from eBay, Amazon, or anywhere else, so it’s simply a numbers game for these fraudsters. BM

THE PACKAGE WEIGHT EXCEEDS THE ALLOWABLE FREE DELIVERY LIMIT.
PRINT OUT THE INVOICE COPY ATTACHEMENT AND TEH COLLECT THE PACKAGE AT OUR OFFICE…ETC ETC

I AM EXPECTING A PARCEL, BUT FOUND THE EMAIL SUSPICIOUS AS FEDEX SHOULDNT HAVE HAD MY EMAIL ADDRESS.
LUCKLY FOR MYSELF I TRIED TO RETREIVE THE ZIP FILE ON MY BLACKBERRY BUT IT DID NOT OPEN, I LOOKED UP FEDEX WEBSITE AND DECIDED TO CAL THEM, THEY ARE AWARE OF TEH SPAM EMAILS AND HAVE SAID TO DELETE THE EMAIL WITHOUT OPENING IT.

Noels Says:

I have just received a notification in my letter box from Australia Post that I have a parcel to collect at the post office which I was not expecting.( I believe this is genuine).

Then I receive this email from Fed Ex the same day. So I unfortunately opened it also not understanding what this parcel could be. I have a Mac. I tried several times to open the attachment and just ended up with a lot of alphabet letters and numbers on the screen. I then decided to go to the fed ex site and discovered that this is a hoax email containing a virus.

I actually don’t have any virus antiware on my Mac as when I purchased the computer the salesman told me I didn’t need to because of the system in the Mac. Is this correct? I have been using the computer since deleting the email and there doesn’t appear to be any issues?

Not knowing what the virus was and not using Macs, I can’t be sure, but most viruses are written to attack PCs not Macs, so if you are showing no issues you could be okay. f-secure do a free anti-virus for the mac, to be on the safe sife, it may be worth having a look at that. Also, read this -BM

I’m a nooby - how can these use an address “…@fedex.com”? Isn’t that locked up by the real Federal Express? You can send an email so it looks like it comes from any address quite easily. I won’t explain how it’s done on here though, but if you really wanted to know, there are dozens of places on the net that explain how to do it. BM

Zahid Says:

How can you tell the email is a scam, especially when a well known name is used like Fedex. Why did this email not go to my junk box as opposed to my inbox. There are numerous ways to spot scam emails. The main one with Fedex is that they don’t send emails to parcel recipients. For a start, they don’t take the recipients email address when you book a parcel to them. Other things to spot: Did they use your name, or dear customer? Is their a telephone number to ring? Does the email come from Fedex? Do the links on the email go to Fedex on the hover-over pop-up. Is their a zip file or an exe file - why would you go to the trouble of zipping up a single delivery sheet? etc. etc. As for your question about your junk mail, that totally depends on how your junk mail is set up and if the email had hidden text. I received an email similar to all the above this morning but stating it was from DHL, unfortunately I tried to open it as I am expecting an important package to arrive in the next couple of days. However I tried opening it on my iPhone; the attachment was a zip file and my ph tried to open it in the PDF Reader app which it couldn’t do but it automatically saved the zip folder. It was at this point I realized this was potentially not legit so deleted the folder fro my iPhone and the original message from my email folders. Has anyone else opened this on their iPhone and if so were there any consequences? My understanding is iOS Is not really susceptible to many viruses - yet that is. Comments anyone? I’m no expert on apple products, but I haven’t heard from anyone that has had an issue with virusus on their iphone. BM

abi Says:

I’ve read all the comments on this site and they are using the same story for a while and then changing it slightly every month. They are getting desperate as I received one last month saying if I didn’t collect within 30 working days, I would be charged $3.94 per day. Now it’s up to $15 a day! I can understand why people might try and open it as I was worried they might send me a huge bill…until common sense took over and realised they could not have my home address,or the right to claim compensation without proof I had sent it which of course I did not! Thankyou for confirming my suspicions. I feel better.x

The price is going up. My email says the price to hold it in the company is $9.61 if not received in 30 days. Glad I was too dumb to print the label before I deleted it. I printed the email and then called FedEx and they said to ignore it. Then my daughter told me sdhe had heard on TV that it was a scam.

Colin Says:

I think I know where they get the emails. Facebook!! I know that as the emails I get are all to the address I only use for Facebook!!!

How they do it, is another matter! But I do get other crap to that address as well.

I have now had DHL and UPS this morning as well as the Fedex ones!

Why are these people doing this? What is in it for them?

Is it some form of terrorism??? No, they are simply criminal scum that want to use your personal information for fraudulent purposes. BM

Phil E Says:

I received a suspicious email from: customer.services@ ussfedex.com. It had a link with a FedEx logo to click on. However, I was expecting a package that didn’t yet arrive. I’m thinking it would be very hard to obtain a FedEx address as the 1 listed above but after reading this blog, I wanted to be 100% sure. Is this email address: customer.services@ ussfedex.com legitimate? It could be falsified the sender’s email address very easily, or if it’s a legitimate site, sent it from a Trjan insite the owner’s machine, but it’s more likely false. BM

Debbie Says:

Subject: FedEx delivery refuse ID#72447

Unfortunately we failed to deliver the postal package you have sent on the 27th August in time because the recipients address is erroneous.

Please print out the lable copy attached and collect the package at our office.

Well, at least they are now using big words and are mailing the purported sender not the recepient whose e-mail address they could not possibly have. However they fail to leave any contact details, use my name or sign off with one of their own names. Oh and I haven’t sent any packages ;-)

Debbie Says:

Oh and to add, I forwarded my e-mail to abuse@ fedex.com and they have mailed me back the following response:

Thank you for contacting FedEx. We appreciate your taking the time to send
us this information.

Here are tips on how to recognize a fraudulent e-mail:
– The e-mail asks for your personal information or a payment. FedEx does
not request personal information or payments via unsolicited mail or e-mail
for goods being shipped or held.
– The e-mail claims to be from FedEx regarding a package that could not be
delivered. These e-mails ask you to open an attachment to obtain the
airbill or invoice for picking up the package. FedEx tracking updates for
undeliverable packages do not include attachments. The attachment
contained in this type of e-mail activates a virus. DO NOT OPEN the
attachment. Instead, delete the e-mail immediately.

Fraudulent e-mails are the unauthorized actions of third parties not
associated with FedEx. You can help us make your online experience with
FedEx safe and efficient by reporting suspicious e-mails.

The following types of e-mails will be routed to our fraudulent e-mail unit:
– Unsolicited e-mails that claim to come from FedEx.
– E-mails that include attachments.
– E-mails requesting your personal information.
– E-mails that request a payment.
– E-mails that misuse the FedEx logo.

Jason Says:

My mom received the same email as Maureen Hope, and unfortunately, clicked the link because she was actually expecting a package from Fedex. She ended up downloading a file and opening it because she did not know any better.

Her computer is infected with something nasty…still working on fixing it. Even though Kaspersky did not prevent the infection, it is doing a good job at preventing the attacks when connected to the internet.

There is no reason for Fedex to send you emails like this. Even the Fedex logo in the email was not right!

Susan Bennett Says:

I got the exact same one as the person before me. I had a warning that it was suspicious so I didn’t download it. i googled Fed Ex scams and it brought me here. It seems as though every few months they change the letter slightly. Glad I didn’t open it and thankful for informative sites like this. Such a shame people do this and rightfully cause us all to be so suspicious.

Jaye Jenkins Says:

Same here. Twice now I received an email that my parcel could not be delivered. Haven’t opened either–thank goodness. Keep up the good work.

I just got something very similar today–and with Christmas here, it’s very likely someone would open this. It said it was from the Postal Service, and contained a tracking number. The odd thing, and what made me suspect, was that the email said Postal Service, but the text within the email it said FedEx, and was signed FedEx Team. This email also said to click on a link to get a receipt and take it to the post office to claim the parcel. I went to the postal service site and the fed ex site to track the number, and of course it didn’t exist. I googled FedEx scams and ended up here–great job!

I got the same message but it started out like it was from the post office and claimed to be from Fed Ex since I am a retired post office carrier. I did not check on the package number because we do not send out email for all our packages. I called the postoffice and check with my old boss and called Fed Ex they told be to report it to abusefedex and that did not work.

Lea Says:

Just checked my emails to find an identical email as above for this month (December). I wasn’t expecting any more parcels but the mail said they’d tried to deliver on the 24th of December, I’d been in all day so that sent alarm bells ringing. Checked online for reports and found this site (thank you to whom ever started it).
